Surgut State University (SurSU) is located in the city of Surgut in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug – Yugra (KMAO), region in Western Siberia. The university was established in 1993 upon the initiative of the KMAO Government.
SurSU is comprised of six educational institutes and one research institute with 700 academic and teaching staff. There are over 7500 undergraduates, graduate and postgraduate students at the university. SurSU provides a number of undergraduate, master and postgraduate programs, in the following areas: science, law, economy and management, engineering, medicine and humanities. The University cooperates with Surgut secondary schools and provides them with learning courses in programming, operating systems administrating, chemistry, and electrical engineering. Such opportunity helps pupils to choose their future professional specialization. The University also works in close coordination with colleges.
SurSU is a member of the University of Arctic (UArctic Association), Eurasian Universities Association (EUA) and the International Research Consortia “Trans-Siberian Scientific Way” (TSSW).
The University offers a wide range of well-equipped facilities, including supercomputer center, medical simulation center, research laboratories in robotics, energy and electrical technology, multi-channel communication systems and switching systems, petroleum chemistry, etc. SurSU laboratories and interdisciplinary centers undertake basic and applied research projects in the key scientific areas, identified by the regional Government: Petroleum Chemistry, Synthesis of New Substances and Materials, Environmental Science, Healthcare in the Nordic conditions, Biotechnology, Modelling of Complex Natural Systems, Computational Hydrodynamics. Research projects are supported by the grants of the Russian Fund for Basic Research and grants of the regional government.
Moreover, SurSU is one of the leading providers of highly qualified staff for the economic and social spheres in the region. The University is also an important city-forming enterprise in Surgut, the largest city in the region (about 400 thousand residents), which is home to 25% of KMAO population.
SurSU is under the authority of the regional government. The Government of KMAO considers the University as a center of economic diversification based on innovations, therefore, the Governor decided to create a new Innovational and Educational Complex in Surgut on the basis of Surgut University. The project is being implemented with consulting and mentoring support of the World Bank and aimed at the development of the University campus (including research and education facilities, as well as innovation support infrastructure). Other objectives include attraction of companies and investors to cooperate with the University, enhancing of R&D activities, increasing the number of students and attraction of talented scientists.
The Complex is supposed to boost the economic development of the region by concentrating intellectual and scientific capacity (from KMAO and other regions of Russia) and to train highly-skilled specialists to meet the demands of regional, national and international employers. The Complex aims to become a center of education, groundbreaking scientific research, culture and sport. It will play a major role in the scientific and educational activities of the region.
