Nizhnevartovsk is a unique city. It became famous because of the legendary Samotlor oil field. For many people Nizhnevartovsk is life, destiny and hope. The history of Nizhnevartovsk is made up of the biographies of several generations of the workers who built the city and developed the unique virgin oil field.
According to the old-timers and local historians, in 1909 a firewood pier was built on the right bank of the Ob. It was used by the merchant steamers as a firewood supply dock. In the language of the indigenous peoples, the name of the pier meant "in the lower reaches and at the bend of the river." It was true that the river made a steep bend at that place.
Soon after the pier construction, the first settlers built five houses, the whole population of which were 11 people. The names of the first settlers were Panov, Silkin, and Pletnev. Their occupations were logging, fur animals hunting, and fishing.
In January 1924, the Nizhnevartovsk village Soviet was formed, and on 29 September 1964 Nizhnevartovskoe village acquired a townsite status.
On 29 May 1965, the head of the Megion oil exploration expedition radioed the head of the Tyumen geological exploration department: "An oil gusher at Samotlor R-1 2123-2130 meters.
Visual flow rate over 300 cubic meters per day." That was the beginning of a new stage in the life of Nizhnevartovsk. The whole country heard the proud word "Samotlor".
On 9 March 1972, townsite Nizhnevartovsky was granted the status of a city by the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR.
Samotlor was the largest gem in the region's oil necklace, however, it was framed with dozens of smaller underground oil storerooms. The peak of production at Samotlor was reached in 1980. 154.6 million tons of oil were extracted from the depths of the unique and the largest at that time oilfield in the world.
